The Armed Forces are the national pride and the ever-vigilant sentinels of the country's independence. The primary task of the Armed Forces is to defend the national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Bangladesh.
It also assists the civil administration in maintaining internal peace and security in times of emergencies. Other important assignments like disaster management and UN peace-keeping missions are also carried out by them when required. There are three main branches of Bangladesh Armed Forces, namely, the Army, the Navy and the Air Force. Paramilitary forces such as Bangladesh Rifles, Bangladesh Police, Ansars and the Village Defence Party also exist in the country.
